Hey, let’s do what the Chinese did. Stage a revolution that dismantles the old elite order and unifies the country. Let’s ban tribalism and crush entrenched capitalist interests. Let’s wage a struggle against imperial domination and rally under a revolutionary party capable of providing decades of disciplined, consistent leadership. Let’s support a leader ruthless enough to root out the internal saboteurs that inevitably emerge within revolutionary systems themselves.

Then let’s endure a long period of isolationism, however painful, to build internal cohesion, resilience, and self-sufficiency. Let’s make mistakes along the way, admit those mistakes honestly, correct them, and move forward.

And once the hard, ugly work is done, let’s have a pragmatic leader willing to look beyond ideological purity, negotiate even with enemies, and extract concessions from them. Let’s exploit the opportunism of rival powers to our own advantage and use it to expand the economy. Let’s play the long game.

You see, when people point to China and tell us to “do what China did,” they almost always begin the story at the point where China was already developed. That’s what makes the conversation so laughable to me. It is pure fantasy.

You do not become China without the ideological foundation, the sacrifices, the social discipline, and the decades of consistency that produced the development people admire today. There is no half-stepping on that journey.

And for me, I already know in my mind that if a society truly wants that outcome, then all of those difficult stages would have to be confronted sooner or later. We might as well start preparing ourselves now.
