A BJP leader-linked private school in Mira Road East has asked students to avoid carrying food containing onion, garlic, potato, beetroot and other “Kanda-Mool” vegetables during Paryushan Parva.
Seven Square Academy issued the circular on September 9, asking students to “carry their tiffin accordingly, without Kanda-Mool”. It also said the school canteen would serve food without onion, garlic and potato during the period.
The school said the request was made to honour the Jain festival and its values of “self-control, compassion, non-violence and harmony”.
The school is run by the Seven Eleven Education Society, whose chairperson is the wife of Bhayandar BJP MLA Narendra Mehta.
The MNS has filed a complaint with the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, arguing that dietary practices associated with a particular religious tradition should not be imposed on students from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
The complaint also raises questions over whether the decision required consultation with the PTA and School Management Committee.

A Karnataka Congress spokesperson has launched a civic-tech platform aimed at tracking basic infrastructure problems in the state’s government schools.
Called NammaShale, the platform allows citizens to report issues such as inadequate toilets, drinking water, electricity, furniture and classroom facilities. Verified complaints are routed to the relevant education officials, while users can track their status on the platform.
The platform says that if a reported issue remains unresolved for 30 days, it can then be opened up for support from CSR initiatives, NGOs, individuals or local communities. It also has an “Adopt a Government School” option.
According to the platform, it received more than 200 reports within its first week, including from Ballari, Raichur, Bidar and Bagalkot.
The larger question is whether citizen reporting can actually improve accountability in a system with more than 47,000 government schools, or whether it risks becoming another layer between citizens and the government machinery responsible for fixing these problems.

Currently serving as Union Heavy Industries Minister, Kumaraswamy has, however, denied any immediate plans to return to Ka politics rnataka.
His caste equation, executive experience and the lack of a strong leadership in the state BJP are being seen as key factors behind the possible move.
