People w/ mental health conditions make up 53% of the population at Rikers.
On average, they are held 61% longer.
We pay $556,000 per person annually to keep them in jail. 90% on Rikers are held without conviction.
By contrast, it costs ~$42k to put them in supportive housing.
It is obscene to me that we are cutting food stamps for 31 million people at a time when the top 0.1% of Americans own more wealth than the bottom 90%.
No one should starve in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Today, let us remember Martin Luther King as he was: A Black radical anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, revolutionary Christian internationalist who was deemed an enemy of the State and assassinated for his radical work. Just about everything else is a lie.
Under drug decriminalization, the only thing that is no longer a crime is drug possession.
If you commit actual crime, drug-related or not, it’s still a crime.
The conflation of drug decrim with decriminalizing theft is intentional misinformation that reinforces the drug war./
"Don't make a wrong move," the officer said as he pinned the struggling subject to the ground. "Period."
The officer tightened the handcuffs around the subject's thin wrists.
"Ow, ow, ow, it really hurts," the subject exclaimed.
The “subject” was 7.https://t.co/DjWxj6a1PG

@scvotes why did a poll worker say I was not allowed to have my phone out while voting? I was not photographing or videoing or using it to communicate. I was using my phone to confirm candidate info. SMH
What’s happening this morning in Houston should send chills down the spines of every person in this country. Police in uniform packing government hearing to intimidate witnesses, advocates against police violence, and legislators voting on expanding the police budget.
Studies have shown that a significant percentage of white Americans will oppose social programs that benefit them because they think too many Black people will benefit as well. It's just rarely made this explicit these days.
First: I’m pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession. There are thousands of people who were previously convicted of simple possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result. My pardon will remove this burden.
According to FBI crime estimates released today, "violent crime" decreased 1% in 2021 and "property crime" decreased 3.8%. Every media outlet should ask itself if this is the impression it gave with its volume of crime coverage and choices of anecdotes.
Houston hasn't ended homelessness, but over the last decade the city moved more than 25,000 homeless people into apartments and houses, cutting the number of unhoused people by 63 percent. It's amazing what happens when politicians house the homeless instead of attacking them.
This is pretty obscene actually - we’re told there is no money for childcare or healthcare but senators can just find 45 *billion* dollars down the back of the couch. When it comes to the defense budget, no one ever asks: ‘how will they pay for this?’ https://t.co/0CKWPxlsuy
