My step-father was a very complicated man. His bi-polar disorder created highs and lows throughout my childhood. He's the reason I've experienced a global upbringing while living thru various forms of abuse.

His heart was strong yet his temper was fragile. His intelligence was beyond measured. Though his mistakes were predictable. When I think about what it means to be human - all its flaws and yearning for betterment - I've often thought about him.

It will take years, possibly the rest of my life to process his passing, but my forgiveness began years prior. The pain I feel now will never equal the pain felt years ago. I truly hope he's able to rest in a better place.
