I thought this was a beautiful gesture. Bono rewrote the lyrics of Beautiful Day for his late friend. This song will now always remind me of their friendship.

Bono & Glen Hansard were incredibly close friends. Bono was asked to do the reading by Glen Hansard’s family & the funeral organizers.

Because Hansard's death was sudden, his inner circle arranged a service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral that reflected his deeply collaborative, musical life. They requested that Bono deliver a eulogy & performance.

While the unusual spoken-word rendition raised eyebrows online among some casual viewers, those close to Hansard defended it fiercely, noting that the family explicitly requested the tribute & that it was exactly the kind of artistic, rule-breaking send-off Hansard would have loved.

Bono passed a remark at Glen Hansard's funeral and was castigated by some🙄
When he said “thanks for the use of the hall” - it was an old showbands joke. They used to thank the parish priest for the use of the hall after a gig. It was a dark joke. Hansard would have got it😉
