People Vibecoding playable games doesnt scare me. AI doesn't have experience, and the ones that are satisfied with AI slop are gluttons, they'll play your game too if you can get it in their faces. Im confident that AI games will get less mileage than "friend slop"
I mean to be frank, this is why you shouldn't have been so gung ho on using AI for art. Now you can't use AI in any actual legitimate way without catching flak.
I dont want to defend the "prompt go brrr" AI Bros so itd be great if the Anti-AI Bros could be more reasonable and more informed about AI usage instead of just losing their marbles when something is even 1% AI assisted.
@LagunaTW Like i didnt even get in this convo because of any AI usage. It was for the just basic misunderstanding of how recompilations or rom overhaul mods worked. The rom has been required for this kind of thing since the Pokemon GBA modding days bro
@FountainCartoon Plus, at least on the smaller level, code becomes more of an equation than a creative thing. Protecting that is like being able to DMCA someone for using π.
@FountainCartoon Its why im lenient on AI for code. Im think alot of code used to train ai was alot of publicly available and permissably used code snippets. Like documentation, open source projects, stack overflow posts, and video tutorials and guides.
@ellaerislives@Yokimitsuro This port adds the necessary platform code to the ALREADY decompiled version of the game which was done by this same dev. The decompiled game is an 1:1 recompilation, so it wouldn't work on a windows pc without adding the necessary platform code.
@ellaerislives@Yokimitsuro That's how modding works with jak and daxter and OpenGoal and TeamRuns. That's how it works with Ocarina of Time and Ship of Harkinian. Emulators need the rom for the og assets, what made you think a decomp/recomp wouldn't?
@ellaerislives@Yokimitsuro It COULD have included those. But you know, if you want anyone else to download it, having the end user do the recompile on their end is how you distribute it, emulator or no emulator. Unless you want all the assets to be replaced with legally distinct ones.
@ellaerislives@Yokimitsuro For alot of rom code overhauls like this you cant even distribute the resulting code either, you gotta make like, a patcher. That way youre only distributing code that was not in the original at all.
@ellaerislives@Yokimitsuro@ellaerislives were not allowed to distribute the actual content of the game so you have to have the rom for the assets. The decomp isn't going to include those.
AI is for saving time, doing things no one wants to do, and handling/filtering big data that current human means or rigid automated processes can't handle well.
The gap in technology that AI fills is "Dynamic Automation". Not "replacing talent".
Another ok imo use for AI is one off utility.
For example, Perhaps I have to throw together some verilog code for an fpga. But this is probably the only time ill need or mess with an fpga. Thus, i have no real incentive to actually learn it. I just need a tool that does a thing.
@FountainCartoon The mental gymnastics the AI bros have to go through to justify using AI in place of their non-existent talent.
Can we skip to the part where AI is exclusively used to save time instead? AI has its place, and compensating for lack of talent isn't one of them.
But you have one side, who is lazy and greedy that wants AI to compensate for their lack of skill or seeing it as a cheap way to replace real human talent.
And another side that's being obtuse and arrogant by saying that ANY AI use at all, for ANYTHING, is bad.
This is why I dislike the ai argument. Both sides have bad takes like this.
If an artist wants a custom tool, im all for them using ai to save time in making the tool. Because they want to get back to drawing.
This is vibe-coded.
vibe-coded software is dangerous for multiple reasons, memory leaks, risks to your files/OS, or massive security problems that can't be fixed bc they have no idea what the code actually is.
Try @umoupen instead.
Especially when one is skilled that could have very well done it themselves use the ai to explicitly save on time. And software will have issues even if programmed manually, cus that's an experience thing, not an ai thing. An actual programmer isn't just blindly trusting AIs code
