Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!

Please don’t fall for russian propaganda. Celebrate Ukraine’s independence - but remember: it is much older than 35 years.

If you listen to the Independence Day addresses of Ukrainian presidents, you’ll often hear that in 1991, Ukraine regained its independence. That wording matters.

Ukraine’s history did not begin in 1991. Its traditions of statehood go back centuries - long before the modern russian state.

Why is this important? Because russian propaganda repeatedly claims that the USSR somehow “created” Ukraine and that Ukraine had no independent history, culture, or identity. That is simply false.

So today, celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day - but remember that Ukrainian statehood and identity are far older than 1991.

And yes, Ukraine’s history goes back more than 1,000 years. It also has one of the oldest constitutional documents in the world, written by Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host Pylyp Orlyk. But all of that is a topic for another video.

Why is DSA, particularly at a national level, utterly allergic to talking about one of the most important loci of 21st century imperialism: Ukraine?

While I do truly appreciate the new program for its vision (an incomplete one, but a valuably guiding one nonetheless), it is just so bizarre to me that we have an entire plank on Palestine (good!) but say absolutely nothing about the now four-year long Russian imperialist war against Ukraine and how American socialists should orient themselves on the issue.

It seems, to most DSAers, the predominant positions are either absolute agnosticism or campism (and even in the latter case, they usually just don't talk about it). This is sort of important, guys.
