This is a huge story: Samsung and SK Hynix, both massive South Korean tech conglomerates, are studying replacing U.S. chip-making machinery with Chinese equivalents in their China factories, because they're worried the U.S. might tighten export controls in a way that'd render their U.S. machinery unusable.

Very concretely, it means that if those companies were pressured by the US to abandon their Chinese facilities, they'd rather switch to fully Chinese indigenous mode than comply.

Which makes sense: for both these companies, China is both their factory floor and their customer. About 40% of Samsung's NAND and 30–45% of SK Hynix's memory output comes from Chinese fabs. If the US forces that kind of choice, it won't get the answer it wants.

It also highlights how little trust there now is in the US: the media always mention the so-called "China threat" but, if you follow the money, top firms from supposed "US allies" are clearly more worried about the "US threat" than they are about Beijing.

For those who lack the tools of learning and their own reasoned worldview and attendant evaluative criteria, Artificial Intelligence represents one of the worst disasters of manipulated individualism in our age, in that it imposes pseudo-normative criteria upon such users (criteria which are really just the lowest common denominator of mainstream sentiment), and simultaneously endows those criteria with a semblance of rational justification (ostensibly coherent in isolation from critical ability on the part of the user), creating the illusion that 1 the AI system is authoritative, and 2 engagement with it empowering.

On the other hand, AI is a research tool of truly extraordinary power for the few who know how to wield it, in that they do possess the tools of learning, and understand that AI can only amplify your own criteria, not provide them.

Look then at how it empowers the few and degrades the many.

Possibly for the first time in British Muslim history, 15,000 people were ordered to run for cover when faced with 12 individuals—one of whom was 83 years old.

Even more astonishing, they did so on the advice of the very authorities and institutions that have, for decades, played a role in the oppression, criminalisation and even the killing of Muslims, both at home and abroad.

These are the same people who sell Jannah from the pulpit, fill gatherings with stories of the courage of the Ṣaḥābah (May Allāh be pleased with them all), yet folded before anything had even happened. The usual excuse about "following the guidelines" was rolled out, as though that settles every matter.

Guidelines exist for countless things. Before an operation, doctors explain the risks and leave the decision to the patient. They do not simply cancel the operation because there are risks. Risk is part of life.

We saw the same mentality during the COVID era. While Boris Johnson partied behind closed doors, these very people treated every government announcement as though it were revelation. Nothing has changed.

What message does this send? That the first response to a potential threat is not resilience, preparedness or trust in Allāh, but retreat. If you spend years preaching courage, conviction and reliance upon Allāh, then at the first sign of danger your actions should reflect your words. Otherwise, the contradiction speaks louder than any lecture ever could.
