🐄 HOW DOES A COW DIGEST GRASS?

Unlike humans, cows have a unique 4-compartment stomach that allows them to turn tough grass into energy and protein.

Here's how it works:

1️⃣ RUMEN
The largest compartment. Billions of microbes break down fiber from grass and produce nutrients.

2️⃣ RETICULUM
Works with the rumen to trap foreign objects and form "cud" for regurgitation.

3️⃣ OMASUM
Absorbs water, minerals, and nutrients from partially digested feed.

4️⃣ ABOMASUM
The "true stomach." Digestive acids and enzymes break down food just like in humans.

🔄 Cows chew grass, swallow it, regurgitate it as cud, chew it again, and then digest it fully.

This process allows ruminants to convert low-quality forage into high-quality milk and meat.
