Today marks 42 years since my mother, #CorettaScottKing, stood beside President Ronald Reagan as he signed the bill establishing #MLKDay as a federal holiday. Her heart and vision were at the center of this moment—a day that would forever honor my father, Dr. #MartinLutherKingJr’s, legacy and which my mother hoped would inspire a nation to uphold justice, peace, and unity.
My mother’s journey was not easy. She spent years advocating, gathering support, and persisting through countless challenges, all because she understood that Dr. King’s legacy of love, courage, and nonviolence had to be enshrined in our national conscience.
Her greatness was not just in her unwavering resolve, but in her faith that we could be better as humanity if we followed the path of nonviolence to create a world where peace with justice is a reality.
What we needed today was a President who evoked compassion for families, mourning for the lives lost, and a unified commitment to the safety of travelers.
Instead, what we experienced was a divisive, insensitive message, which lacked any factual basis for casting blame on DEI.
The message evoked racism, discrimination, and continued misunderstanding of the intent of initiatives that did not dismiss merit and excellence, but ensured that merit and excellence were not dismissed in non-white, non-male, non-heterosexual, differently-abled people.
We have a choice, America.
We can educate and elevate ourselves beyond this.
In doing so, we must cultivate and expect leadership that promotes dignity and creates an atmosphere for building the Beloved Community.

BREAKING: The Illinois Supreme Court just upheld the state’s assault weapons ban passed after last summers mass shooting in Highland Park. This is a significant victory for the movement for gun safety and getting semiautomatic rifles off our streets.

To the true meaning of Aloha-for those of us who have been gifted to experience it we must honor it with whatever we can in this moment. If you have experienced Hawaii, especially Maui, now is the moment to give back to those in need - to the people, land and spirit of Aloha.
Illinois will not stand for watering down our nation's history. And I urge the @CollegeBoard to do the same.
We reject any change to AP African American Studies in order to appease extremists like the Florida Governor and his Republican allies. https://t.co/CVEtRkHBtF
I’m thinking of all the parents and kids I met this year after Uvalde, Buffalo, and Highland Park who will be having their first thanksgiving today with an empty seat. No one wants this to continue. We must work together- focused on what we can agree on to end this.

It’s a waste of time to tell trailblazers, dreamers, creatives that they’re going the wrong way.
We know.
That’s the point. We don’t want to go where the current path leads.
