@kellybergin I started staying home by myself afterschool at 8. At 12, I was also watching kids ages 10 & younger. My nieces were both 13 before able to babysit and then only during the day and more like a Mother’s helper. They couldn’t stay home alone until 14.

For those who don't understand why families struggle to put a few kids through preschool:

The average price for preschool in NC ($9,000) is more than in-state tuition at UNC-Chapel Hill ($7,000).

So it's like putting kids through college *before* you've had any time to save up.
