Other than the Super Bowl, there’s very few things left that Americans do together any more. Church, movies, TV, voting, social clubs, etc; all of that has eroded and been replaced by hyper-specific social media algorithms aimed at feeding you endless content.
It’s easy to hate on Marvel movies, but they were one of the last vestiges of popular culture. Now, everyone just watches their own niche movies and shows on various streaming services with little overlap in media consumed.

The hidden assumption behind much of the immigration debate is that there is an "American culture" that immigrants could assimilate into. There's good reason to think that no longer exists.
Two things can be true at once:
- There is good reason to be concerned about the trajectory of AI
- AI companies have an incentive to promulgate AI doomerism to provide cover for regulatory capture
