New pub alert! Understanding how early reading skills are impacted by phonological differences b/w dialects helps teachers distinguish differences from difficulties. @thekarolmoore@KocherhansSarah
@BritMartinez There is much research showing that teachers in their training programs were not taught how to actually teach reading. There is a shift towards the Science of Reading. Great podcast here: #soldastory#emilyhanford
I listened to Ep.6 yesterday & this still bothers me: “Dyslexia is a trojan horse to bring back phonics at the expense of everything else.”~LC. Really?? Dyslexia is real. It’s not a pawn in curricular wars. It’s a learning disability that needs phonics as part of its remediation.
The MTSS process isn’t about moving Ss through tiers to get them into SPED. Nor is it about checking the boxes to “play the game”. It’s actually just matching student needs to instruction through the systematic use of assessment data. This can manifest itself in multiple ways.
@EmilyBHardeman @missypurcell1 @ehanford@GwinnettSchools I have heard this same thought about schools being unwilling to change from many parents fall over the US. Parents have led the way for changes in dyslexia legislation. It’s time for them to do it once again! Agree💯
“IQ tests are not needed to determine dyslexia identification. Dyslexia identification is not reliable apart from instruction.” Jack Fletcher #dyslexiacon22
“We cannot use special education as a solution to the number of students who are struggling to read. Embrace a model of prevention. Tier 1 instruction is key.” - Jack Fletcher, #dyslexiacon22
Don’t miss episode 4. We must get reading right for our children. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is ineffective and the clock is ticking.
Sold a Story continues tomorrow with Episode 4, The Superstar.
"If Beyonce came and gave a private concert in my district, it would not have been a bigger deal for many of my teachers."
