It recieved immediate backlash and was quickly abandoned due to safety concerns.

A Maldivian TikTok content creator, Yaaya, has been taken into custody by the Maldives Police Service on Saturday (May 4, 2024). Yaaya was detained after a court order was issued for their arrest following public outrage over videos they share on TikTok. https://t.co/xsaEOMjDgT

Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, announces that the Maldivian Government will establish the death penalty. This is extremely concerning news for Maldivians who may be considered “apostates”.

This could include ex-Muslims, atheists, non-Muslim, and queer Maldivians. Given the polarising and violent nature of Maldivian politics, it could also include political opponents.

The Maldivian Education Ministry has denied the legitimacy document on its Facebook page. It is unclear whether it is or was discussed internally and they are backtracking due to bad press and anger from Malé elites.

Rumor: Alleged internal documents from the Maldivian Ministry of Education reveal plans to enforce hijab in schools, as well as plans to enact a ban on wearing garments in public that do not meet "social standards". Policies are alleged to come into effect on 1st of March 2024.
