Remembering the great Wynton Kelly who was born on this day in 1931. Kelly is known for his lively, blues-based playing. He also contributed to Miles Davis' epochal album Kind of Blue.

Much more than a sideman, Kelly was truly special as a musician. His first album as a band leader, Piano Interpretations, was recorded in 1951 by Blue Note, when he was only 19 years old.

As Miles Davis said in his inimitable style: "Wynton's the light for the cigarette. He lights and fire keeps it going. Without him, there's no smoking. He is the only pianist who could make the tune get off the ground."

Here, he is performing Walkin' with John Coltrane on saxophone, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums live in Germany, 1960.
