Bald eagles are a federally protected species, and every bald eagle you see at a zoo, aquarium or nature center is a non-releasable bird. This means that these individuals have sustained injuries or have developmental or health conditions that prevent them from surviving in the wild. Our female bald eagle is one of those birds. She suffered a wing injury in Alaska that left her unable to fly, making survival in the wild impossible. More than 25 years ago, she arrived at the Fort Worth Zoo, where she continues to serve as an ambassador for her wild counterparts.
