A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists @pressfreedom says 2025 was the deadliest
year on record for journalists, with 129 media workers killed worldwide. According to the
watchdog, Israeli forces were responsible for about two-thirds of those deaths—around 86
journalists, most of them Palestinian reporters in Gaza. The findings highlight the growing
dangers faced by journalists covering conflict and raise serious concerns about accountability
and protection for the press.

The International Day to Combat Islamophobia is more than a symbolic observance. It is a
global call to action for individuals, institutions, and governments to confront hatred,
challenge discrimination, and reaffirm a shared commitment to human rights, dignity, and
peaceful coexistence. A world free from Islamophobia benefits everyone.

To strengthen global efforts against anti-Muslim hatred, the UN Secretary-General
announced that in May 2025 the High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations,
Miguel Ángel Moratinos, was appointed as the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia.
The move aims to enhance international coordination, promote dialogue, and reinforce
collective action against discrimination targeting Muslim communities worldwide.

The Secretary-General also warned about attacks on mosques, Islamic institutions, and
visible symbols of Muslim identity, which have increased in several countries in recent years.
These acts of violence and intimidation target people for their faith and threaten the
fundamental right to practice religion freely and safely. Protecting places of worship must
remain a global priority.

The March 15th Forum was pleased to see the United Nations General Assembly commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on March 16, 2026. We applaud UN Secretary General Guterres on recognizing the harms caused by Islamophobia, including wars and violence resulting in the death and suffering of Muslims in far too many places. We also appreciate his appointment of His Excellency Miguel Angel Moratinos as the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia. We wish Special Envoy Moratinos much success as he develops an Action Plan to combat Islamophobia, focusing on the priorities of education, addressing hate speech, advocating for relevant legislation, promoting intercultural dialogue, and urging officials to unequivocally condemn incidents of hate-fueled violence. We stand ready to support him in this endeavor and look forward to engaging the private sector in these conversations as they are a critical actor. Muslim communities in many parts of the world continue to face systemic discrimination,
profiling, and exclusion in employment, education, and public life. Such injustices reinforce
harmful stereotypes and normalize prejudice, making it harder for societies to uphold equality
and fairness. Combating these structural barriers is essential to ensuring dignity and equal
opportunity for all.

Speaking at an interfaith iftar with religious minority representatives in Ankara, Recep
Tayyip Erdoğan @RTErdogan warned that the global rise in Islamophobia threatens not only
Muslims but also the broader culture of peaceful coexistence among religions. He highlighted
Türkiye as a country where different faith communities can practice their religion freely and
maintain their institutions with mutual respect. Erdoğan also stressed that hatred against any
faith must be rejected, calling both Islamophobia and antisemitism crimes against humanity
that undermine shared human values.

A new report by the Council on American‑Islamic Relations @CAIRNational says
Islamophobia in the U.S. reached a record high in 2025 with 8,683 anti-Muslim and anti-
Arab complaints, the highest since the group began tracking incidents in 1996. The
organization linked the surge partly to policies under Donald Trump, including crackdowns
on pro-Palestinian protests and stricter immigration enforcement. Reported cases ranged from
employment discrimination and travel profiling to hate incidents and immigration-related
bias, reflecting broader concerns about civil liberties and rising anti-Muslim hostility.

A major concern highlighted by the UN is the growing spread of anti-Muslim hate speech
in online spaces. Digital platforms have increasingly become channels where misinformation,
stereotypes, and hostility toward Muslims circulate widely. Governments, technology
companies, and civil society must work together to curb online hate while safeguarding
freedom of expression and democratic values.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations @CAIRNational condemned the Pentagon’s use
of dangerous anti-Muslim “holy war” rhetoric to justify the bombing of Iran, warning that
framing geopolitical conflicts in religious terms risks inflaming Islamophobia and putting
Muslim communities at greater risk. CAIR urged U.S. officials to reject language that
portrays military action as a religious crusade and to ensure that government messaging does
not demonize Islam or Muslims.

A new report by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate @csohate warns that the
U.S.–Israel war on Iran (launched Feb 28, 2026) has triggered a sharp spike in online
Islamophobia targeting Muslim Americans. Between Feb 28 and March 5 alone, researchers
recorded 25,348 Islamophobic posts on X, reflecting a surge of dehumanizing narratives, hate
speech, and incitement across social media platforms. The report highlights how geopolitical
conflicts are increasingly weaponized online to spread anti-Muslim hostility and stereotypes.

On March 15 – the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the UN Secretary-General
@antonioguterres calls on governments, institutions, and societies worldwide to stand firmly
against anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination. Islamophobia continues to affect millions of
people globally, undermining the principles of equality, human dignity, and religious freedom
that form the foundation of international human rights. Combating this prejudice is essential
to building peaceful and inclusive societies.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson @PaulineHansonOz has sparked widespread condemnation after saying there are “no good Muslims” and claiming some suburbs with large Muslim communities feel “unwelcoming” to non-Muslims. Her remarks drew bipartisan criticism from politicians, human rights officials and mayors who said they are divisive, risk fueling Islamophobia and undermine social cohesion — with calls for her to apologize, withdraw the comments and even face hate-speech charges. Hanson offered a
limited/conditional apology while insisting her views on Islam and security concerns are valid, deepening the national debate over multiculturalism and responsible political discourse.

Australia’s Muslim communities say they feel “under siege” amid a 740% spike in anti-Muslim incidents since late 2023, with assaults, threats, vandalism and harassment rising sharply, including multiple threatening letters to Sydney’s largest mosque just before Ramadan. Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi @MehreenFaruqi says racist rhetoric, amplified
by figures like Pauline Hanson, fuels fear and violence, and calls for stronger political condemnation and protections. PM Albanese condemns threats but critics say government response has been too weak as Australia grapples with rising Islamophobia.

The International Day to Combat Islamophobia is a powerful platform with far-reaching possibilities. But for it to fulfill its global potential, there must be greater international recognition, clarity in definitions, institutional accountability, and active collaboration across sectors. Only then can the observance move from symbolic acknowledgment to meaningful,
sustained action against religious hatred in all its forms.
