Some people wonder whose side I’m on.

Here’s my answer:
I am a proud Democrat. But when it’s time to do analysis, I don’t focus on teams. I focus on principles.

Team politics is easy. Principles are hard — especially when they cost you something.

Mine are simple.

#1 Democracy for everybody
#2 Dignity for everybody
#3 Opportunity for everybody

Those are my “North Stars.” Of course, I don’t always get it right. I mess up or fall short sometimes. And politics is inherently messy — with trade offs, contradictions and no easy answers. So I understand the temptation to simply pick a side and back the same team on every issue.

But if we always choose team jerseys over core values, we lose the plot. And we may lose the country.
