I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins,

CBP has updated its rules for searching electronic devices at ports of entry. Every traveler should pay attention.
For basic searches at the airport, agents can inspect your phone, laptop, tablet, smartwatch, SIM card, or other devices without a warrant and without any suspicion. They don’t need to suspect you of a crime or a visa violation. At the border, they have wide latitude to examine whatever is stored directly on your device.
Advanced searches are a bigger deal - this is when they hook your device up to external equipment to read, copy, or deeply analyze everything on it. The 2026 update allows broader use of these advanced searches when “national security” is cited, though it requires higher approval and some documentation.
Travel smart and prepare accordingly. Your data is on your device - protect it.
