Awo Saw the Future in 1966. We Are Living in It. In 1966, Awo published a book titled "Thoughts on Nigerian Constitution". In that book, Awo issued a stern warning that reads less like a political analysis and more like a diagnosis of present-day Nigeria:

"The work of government under a unitary constitution is bound to become unduly complex, inextricably tangled, extremely unwieldy and wasteful, and productive of disharmony and discontent... Nigerians are unwittingly creating a Leviathan for themselves before whom they would have to go on their knees."

Read that again!.

A Leviathan is a central monster that controls everything, feeds on everyone, and serves almost no one.

In that book Awo warned that stripping regional autonomy would force diverse regions into an unhealthy, desperate battle over a single central pot, inevitably triggering administrative breakdown.

The ignorant 1966 military boys didn’t listen. Ironsi went ahead to create the Leviathan. And today, 200 million people are forced to go on their knees to ask Abuja for basic security, light, and economic survival.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu fought the Leviathan first as Governor of Lagos State, He fought Abuja for state rights, local government autonomy, and fiscal federalism, and now in the presidency pushing structural reforms. Yet, any genuine attempt to dismantle this central monster faces severe hate.

Why? Because the grandchildren of Ironsi the ideological heirs of Unitary Decree 34 of 1966 who dismantled true federalism are terrified. They benefit from the Leviathan ideology. They thrive and survive on the Leviathan model. To them, decentralizing power, returning local government funds directly to the grassroots, and reforming state-level authority is a threat to what they created ...

Until we fully break the unitary stronghold and restore genuine fiscal federalism, no leader no matter their vision can fix a machine that was built wrong from the start.
