In early May 1940, near the base of Boulder Mountain in Broadwater County, Montana, gold prospector Udo Wartena was working his remote mining claim.

He had been diverting water from a nearby stream by moving boulders when he heard a persistent humming sound.

Climbing to higher ground for a better view, he saw something extraordinary: a large metallic disc hovering silently just above a meadow. Roughly 30 meters (about 100 feet) across and 10–11 meters high, it resembled two large plates or soup bowls stacked rim-to-rim, one inverted over the other. Its surface had the color of stainless steel, though not highly polished.

The craft hovered level despite the sloping terrain, showing no visible means of support and leaving no exhaust or obvious disturbance.
As Wartena watched, a circular stairway unfolded from the underside of the disc. A man descended calmly and walked toward him.

He appeared to be in his thirties—about Wartena’s own age—wearing a light gray one-piece overall, a matching circular cap, and soft slippers or moccasins.

He extended his hand in greeting, apologized for their presence (explaining it was not their custom to be seen or to interrupt), and asked if they could take some water from the stream. Wartena, seeing no harm, agreed. The man signaled, and a hose or pipe extended from the craft to draw water.

The visitor spoke English fluently but slowly and deliberately, as though carefully choosing each word. He then invited Wartena aboard.

Curious and unafraid, Wartena accepted and followed him up the stairs. Inside, he entered a modest room roughly 12 by 16 feet with indirect lighting near the ceiling. The humming sound was barely noticeable once inside.

There he met a second man, older, with snow-white hair, clear pale skin, and a calm, serene demeanor. Both men had white hair. When Wartena asked their ages, they replied that one was approximately 600 years old and the other over 900, measured in Earth time.

They said they came from a distant planet, knew more than five hundred languages, and were continually learning.

They spoke openly about their technology. Counter-rotating flywheels or rings in the craft’s outer rim generated its own gravitational field, allowing it to overcome the pull of Earth and other celestial bodies while remaining level.

This system also produced an electromagnetic force. They described traveling by “skipping upon the light waves,” focusing on distant stars for energy that could be stored in batteries for emergency use.

They explained that hydrogen extracted from water served as a primary power source—hence their request to take on water from the pure, algae-free stream.

The two men said they sometimes moved among humans to gather information and offer help or instructions where needed, but they avoided interference, particularly in matters of religion.

They offered Wartena a body scan similar to an X-ray to check for impurities and invited him to travel with them. He declined, feeling it would inconvenience too many people on Earth. They accepted his decision calmly, advised him to tell no one for the time being, but noted that in years to come he would be able to speak of the experience without fear.

After roughly two hours, Wartena left the craft. As he walked away, he experienced temporary weakness in his limbs that made movement difficult for a short time. The disc departed, rising and disappearing from view.

Wartena kept the experience completely private for decades—even from his wife—fearing ridicule. Near the end of his life he confided in two close friends and wrote detailed accounts. In 1980 he also sent a letter describing the event to U.S. Senator John Glenn.

He passed away in December 1989 at age 86. Years later, Australian UFO researcher Warren Aston located Wartena’s writings and interviewed his confidants. Aston published the first public account of the case in the March 1998 issue of UFO Magazine, bringing the story to wider attention
