This work was painted in the late 1940s when Theodore Major and his family lived in Wigan. After moving to Appley Bridge in 1950, he painted on board rather than canvas and relatively few works remain from the earlier period.

'Red Dawn,' (c1980) is one of many depicting Theodore Major's visions of a northern industrial town, where small figures are often depicted emerging from a smog of pollution. 'I wish to shock into 'awareness' the sensibility of people... to awaken the mind to spiritual values.'
A truly sublime Theodore Major has been added to our website.
This thick impasto painting titled 'Man in Snow under Dark Sky' typically presents the working-class landscape with a raw, uncompromising intensity.
This has to be one of the best 37" × 30" we've had in the gallery!!

Theodore Major (1908-1999) ‘Man and Boat’
This oil on canvas interestingly shows an early example of Theo dragging paint across the canvas to represent rain. They were more evident with his works on board where he’d use household and wire brushes to create the effect.
