New PM is in. If Burnham is serious about AI, the appointments that matter are Energy and Housing - cheap power and swift planning are where the buildout lives or dies. Merging DSIT into DBT would re-org the bit that works while the actual bottlenecks go unwatched.

The better version: the already trailed cabinet-level AI minister with reach across departments. Burnham doesn’t need to be a tech PM, he needs the right people (with authority) on the bottlenecks.

@Dom_Hallas Totally agree. It re-orgs the department that’s working while the actual AI bottlenecks (power and planning) sit unwatched in other departments entirely. Machinery churn is a year of lost focus precisely where focus is finally paying off.

Advisers matter more than any manifesto in Burnham’s Britain. Almost none of the UK’s AI settlement is in statute. It’s all regulatory steers and ministerial posture, and posture repoints with whoever holds the pen. Simons is now the pen.
