This was 2014, but listen to Peter Obi on good governance!
I really owe Nigerians an apology for campaigning against him in the 2023 election. I thank God for giving me another chance to support and campaign for him in the 2027 election!
Even his haters know he's not a thief.
Escaped 20/10/2020.
Only to be abducted by the Buhari led government shortly after, with the intention to ‘silence’ me forever.
Regardless, we remain unmoved!
This Nigeria will work!
No shade to Lagos Life or its creator yeah, because getting 1 million people to voluntarily use something in 3 days is genuinely impressive. But I think we should be careful about what exactly we are celebrating here.
Comparing Lagos Life’s 3 days to Netflix, Airbnb, Facebook, Spotify, etc. because they all reached 1 million users, misses the fundamental difference between acquiring attention and creating economic or societal value.
Netflix is entertainment, yes, but it built a global distribution and subscription infrastructure. Airbnb facilitates billions in transactions between people who own and need accommodation. Facebook became communication and advertising infrastructure. Spotify built a global music distribution economy. Even where the product is fundamentally entertainment, there is an ecosystem of jobs, transactions, creators, businesses and economic activity around it.
Lagos Life getting 1 million Nigerians to play a Sims-like game is primarily 1 million people giving a product their time and attention. And apparently it has generated around $46k in revenue, which is great for the creator, but we should be honest about what that means at a national level. 1 million players is not automatically 1 million units of economic value.
And this is where I find the celebration slightly uncomfortable because Nigeria is dealing with an economy that is struggling, institutions that require serious public attention, a judiciary whose independence and decisions matter enormously, and another major election cycle approaching. We are fighting for jobs, productivity, infrastructure, education, healthcare, security and functioning institutions.
Yet we can mobilise a million Nigerians in three days around a game, then move on to the next viral game when the novelty wears off. Lagos Run was yesterday’s obsession; Lagos Life is today’s. Tomorrow it will be something else. And truthfully, this is actually the fascinating part - the problem isn’t that Nigerians lack attention, we clearly do have it. The problem is what we repeatedly succeed in directing that attention toward.
If one Nigerian developer can mobilise 1 million Nigerians organically, with virtually no advertising or external funding, imagine what that same distribution power could accomplish if it were deliberately attached to civic education, local commerce, skills, public-interest technology, Nigerian products, fundraising, education or even election awareness.
I am not saying people shouldn’t have fun yeah, we absolutely should, and Lagos Life may have genuine cultural and technological value. But 1 million people playing a game is not, by itself, evidence that Nigeria has created 1 million units of progress.
“What could we get 1 million Nigerians to do in three days if we actually cared about the outcome?”
I really don’t understand why people hate Mondays.. It may be unpopular, but I love Mondays. It signifies newness, an opportunity to go again.. so I’m always pumped😅✨
#monday
When people say they make their first million, do they mean, their first 1,000,000 pay check or an aggregation where their business or job has earned over a million?
I genuinely want to know?
I remember one time being in a meeting with other women in church, I was the only man in the meeting.
I remember everyone echoing that “is it not just to bring money?”, men cannot reduce their parenting to “I brought money”.
I listened to their complaints and responded “it’s not just money, that money is sometimes a culmination of his care and love for this family, but the fact you think of it as just money means you despise his sweat and his pain”… “why not consider giving him something else to forge that sweat into, and watch him spring to action”.
My message was simple, stop despising his provision, it’s very wicked and unfair. I watched a calm come into the room.
I added more things along the lines of, if he doesn’t know how else, try help him see that responsibility, yes that is hard, but help him, this is why you both are on this partnership. If you assume malice everytime, you will treat him as an enemy instead of an ignorant partner.
I offered context into how the male brain works, things I am unwilling to talk about on social media. And slowly, I saw them open up to the challenge.
Men are human too, we all need to stop kicking at them. You and them are married for the first time, give each other the safety to grow into God’s vision of both yourselves.
