I’m very happy with this draw. We’ve been starved of the opportunity to go up against a giant, so having three big clubs in there is exciting. It’s been way too long.

Fenerbahçe, Lille, Sporting, Slovan Bratislava and AEK Athens are all games where Roma will be considered favourites. Of course, each of those matches will present different challenges. They’re not “easy” — at the end of the day, it’s the Champions League.

That said, since the introduction of the new league-phase format, 12 points is pretty much a lock to qualify. Last season, 9 points with a respectable goal difference was enough. Roma should be expected to take at least 10 of 15 points from those five fixtures — and that’s me being conservative. If they can’t, they never deserved to advance in the first place.

Winning four of those five is very possible and would certainly make life a lot easier. That would guarantee them a spot in the knockout phase. But it’s the Champions League, and it’s also Roma — we shouldn’t expect any game to be straightforward.

Then, of course, you’ve got the Real Madrid, PSG and United games. I don’t view United as being anywhere near the same tier as the other two, but they’ve got a lot of talent and they’re a historic club. You’re mostly playing with house money in those fixtures, and they’re definitely the ones I’m looking forward to most. This version of Roma is capable of giving any team problems on the right day. Let’s see what happens.
