For most of history, hate has not been considered a crime. It is a sin most of the time in Scripture, especially in the sermon on the Mt. But we actually are called to hate what is evil. It is actually not possible to love without hating what is evil, while seeking to save those trapped in evil (which is love). The implication of Bill C-9 is that we will be an emotionless people.

The Ottawa Statement on Christian Speech

Whereas the Government of Canada has introduced legislation to permit the prosecution of religious speech that is considered hateful,

Whereas the Government of Canada has threatened to tax Christian churches,

Whereas the Government of Canada has stood by as over 100 Christian churches have been subjected to arson and vandalism,

We, the undersigned, petition the Prime Minister and his Cabinet to maintain protections for religious speech within Canada’s law. We denounce any attempt to label the truths of Scripture as “hate speech”.

We believe that God has instituted governing authorities for our good. As such, we are thankful for your leadership and pray for you regularly so that “we may live peaceful and quiet lives, godly and dignified in every way.”

We believe that all earthly powers must answer to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, namely Jesus Christ, who sits at the right hand of God the Father and has dominion over all nations. As such, we believe it is proper to declare to you the eternal truths of his Lordship in a respectful, principled, and submissive manner.

We believe that every human being is created in the image of God and bears intrinsic value. We further believe that every human being has broken God’s perfect law, has sinned, and has fallen short of God’s glory. As such, every human being now faces God’s righteous and eternal judgement apart from saving grace.

We believe that God sent us his son Jesus Christ—who is fully God and fully man— to save all those who call upon his name. This Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised again on the third day. As a result of his redeeming sacrifice, we believe that everyone who repents of their sin and believes in Jesus Christ will not perish but will have eternal life.

We believe that this good news, or “gospel”, is the power of God unto salvation for all who believe and must be proclaimed throughout Canada. We recognize that the gospel of Jesus Christ is a stumbling block to some and foolishness to others, and may be misconstrued as hate speech by those who do not understand the love of God. However, we firmly believe that there is no other name by which we may be saved.

We believe that the preaching of the gospel requires clear statements on the reality of sin. We further believe that, in a culture which encourages or permits many sinful practices, this condemnation of sin may be perceived as “hate speech.”

We believe, nevertheless, that these truths are good news given by a loving God who does not desire that any should perish but that all should repent. As such, we call for the repentance of all people regardless of any false accusation that to do so is “hate speech.”

We believe that these truths are contained most perfectly and fully in the Bible, which is the very word of God, and contains no error or imperfection. We fervently deny that to read, preach, or teach from any part of the Bible is unloving. Rather, we abhor what is evil and hold fast to what is good.

Therefore, we believe that human governments must not restrict our fundamental responsibility before God to preach the gospel. We must obey God rather than man. As such, we humbly request that you fulfill your high responsibility as Canada’s Government and protect the freedom of all Christians to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to our fellow Canadians.
