For those who may not know, Somaliland is not a new country. In fact, it predates Somalia, which illegally claims it.
1: Gained Independence: Somaliland became independent on June 26, 1960, following its separation from British rule.
2: Former Commonwealth Member: It was a member of the British Commonwealth before Somalia occupied it illegally.
3: Early Democracy: Somaliland is one of Africa's oldest democracies, holding free and fair elections since 1960.
4: Genocide under Somalia: The people of Somaliland suffered a brutal genocide under the regime of Siad Barre from 1969 to 1991. During this period, an estimated half a million Somalilanders lost their lives in a campaign of violence and repression.
4: Reclaimed Independence: Although it was occupied by Somalia for a period, Somaliland regained its independence in 1991 after a long and hard-fought struggle.
5: Democratic Stability: Since 1991, Somaliland has held 9 consecutive democratic elections, making it a leader in political stability in the Horn of Africa.
6: Strategic Port: The country boasts the largest port in Sub-Saharan Africa, Berbera, a vital trade hub.
7: Population: Somaliland has a population of approximately 6.5 million people.
8: Capital City: Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland.
9: Longest Coastline: Somaliland features the longest coastline in East Africa, offering significant strategic and economic potential.
10: Rich Cultural Heritage: Somaliland is home to ancient rock art, such as the famous Laas Geel paintings, which are over 5,000 years old and provide a glimpse into the region's early human history.

Lack of international recognition is not an abstraction, it manifests itself in the lives of millions of Somalilanders who endure and survive the severe impact of climate change on daily basis.
What Somalia and Turkey are doing is intrenchment of the status quo and ensuring our people never take up their rightful place on the global stage.
How on earth is this situation unfolding in Ankara whilst our politicians are busy attending local meet and greet clan events?
