When a night at the movies was a family picnic.

Before BKC became BKC, this was home to Mumbai’s first drive-in theatre.

Opened in Bandra East in 1977, it had a giant screen and a vast parking ground. You drove in, parked facing the screen and got the movie sound through a speaker fixed at your parking spot.

And the experience was very Mumbai: folding chairs, chatai, food from home and family picnics under the open sky. No AC though. The mosquitoes were part of the experience too! 😄

The theatre became a favourite of Mumbai’s 70s and 80s generation before eventually shutting down.

Today, the Jio Drive-In at Jio World Drive stands on the same site, bringing the idea back with modern technology.
