Today is Juneteenth.

It became a federally recognized holiday on June 19, 2021 signed into law by The President. This was only 4 years ago and 160 years since the confederation surrendered during the civil war. But it feels like we are on the brink of something similar with ongoing efforts to dismantle diversity equity and inclusion. We don’t want what’s going on in Israel vs Palestine and now Iran. We don’t want what’s going on Ukraine vs Russia. I hate war. I hate what’s going on around the world and in US. We are supposed to be THE UNITED STATES and war ain’t about Unity. We have our rights and can use them while we still have them. I have this platform and will use it will I still have it.

I introduce MARCH MADNESS by Public Enemy. It was an honor to work with the students from Harvard, Berklee, and Howard Universities to create a protest anthem about important issues we are facing as human beings right now.

If I have any advice to give to young writers, artists, actors- and it’s the same for young entrepreneurs- it’s to be delusional. Believe you’re the best in the world, no matter what anyone else is telling you, no matter how many times you get rejected or shot down or told it’s impossible. Believe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this is what you were born to do, that everyone else is just flat wrong. I got rejected 190 times before I sold my first book. I taped them to the walls of my crappy apartment in Boston like I was some sort of serial killer. Then my first six books bombed. Nobody read them. Then I stumbled on those MIT card counters and that chance meeting turned into Bringing Down The House. Which turned into 21. Which led to a random email in the middle of the night, a kid from Harvard telling me his best friend founded Facebook, and nobody had ever heard of him. Which turned into The Social Network. Which led to more books, to writing for Billions, to hanging out with Russian oligarchs and UFO hunters and the kid who robbed NASA and the genius who is making a Woolly Mammoth, meeting so many wonderful readers and fascinating subjects, and now, 25 books later, to Dumb Money flying up the Netflix charts. It all starts with that delusional belief in yourself, that despite all the evidence to the contrary- that you are meant to do this. Believe! No matter how many times you fail, believe!
