Transmission constraint costs hit Β£1.9 billion in 2024/25, that's 71% of all grid balancing costs.
In 2022/23, it was 44%.
Left unfixed, the official trajectory is Β£4β8 BILLION a year by 2030.
So when the Scottish wind blows hard, the grid physically can't move it.
National Grid's solution? Pay the wind farms to switch off, a "constraint payment."
Then pay a gas plant near London to switch ON, because that power still has to come from somewhere.
You pay twice.
Who actually gets paid here?
Generators like SSE pulled in ~Β£45M in just six months from shutdown payments alone (per Bloomberg).
Gas peaker owners get paid to fill the gap.
The wind developer wins. The gas plant wins. The bill payer loses.
The setup is simple.
Scotland has the wind. Huge offshore and onshore farms in the north.
England has the demand. London, the Midlands, the data centers.
The problem: the wires between them are too thin to carry all that power south.
Last year, Britain paid wind farms over Β£350 million to STOP producing electricity.
Then it spent another Β£1 billion turning on gas plants to replace them.
Same year. Same grid. Total bill: ~Β£1.46 billion, paid by British taxpayers, on their power bill.
