DayZ is not just a survival game. Thats what The Long Dark is and it does it very well.
At its core what makes DayZ special is the random interactions and the stories. Along with choice, choice of loot, choice of loot route, what impacts the decisions you make have on your outcome etc. Some of which can have really dynamic survival moments that matter. But they are very rarely preordained by the game as such, they are thrown up by surviving a fight and being red health and then tipping in to starving, or tripping a land mine and breaking you leg at a mil base etc.
