BEFORE THE PROMISES, LOOK AT THE RECORD.

Under Governor Seyi Makinde, Oyo State played a leading role in establishing Amotekun, with the Oyo State Security Network Agency Bill signed into law on March 10, 2020.

His administration has since built and sustained over 2000 strong corps, backed by institutional funding, operational support and specialised hazard allowances.

According to official reports, Oyo Amotekun under SEYI MAKINDE's administration now has 2,500 corps

In 2020, Oyo had 1500 personnel at launch.

2021, it was increased by 25% to deepen Oyo State Security.

2024/2025 an additional 480 sub-unit forest rangers were added to fight kidnapping/forest banditry.

This is more than a policy statement. It is a demonstrated capacity to build, fund and sustain a grassroots security structure.

That experience can be taken beyond Oyo.

What has been built at the state level can be strengthened and scaled at the national level to make Nigeria safer.

The attempt to portray Governor Seyi Makinde’s remarks at the Lafia Town Hall as opposition to security misses the substance of what he said.

His intervention can reasonably be understood as a question of public policy, budgeting and implementation.

Major reforms in national security require more than political approval. They require detailed planning, financial commitments, infrastructure, personnel and sustainable logistics.

When a public official asks whether the necessary provisions have been made in the budget, that should not automatically be interpreted as resistance to the policy itself.

On the contrary, scrutiny of government spending is part of responsible leadership.

Supporting national security and demanding accountability for how it is funded are not contradictory positions.

Nigeria needs both: strong security institutions and sound public financial management.
