If the senses could know everything there was to know, inertia would have eluded us. Germ theory too. Vaccines. Computing. Indirect democracy. Insurance. Interest rates. The two spheres dropped off the leaning tower.
If the immediacy of experience was all that mattered we would not have world we have today.
How could a species with the cognitive hardware to hold a few dozen relationships and no more, evolve to collaborate in the order of millions, tens of millions, and forge nation states, continent-wide alliances, a global economy - where ideas, goods, capital travel mostly unfettered. Eight billion people. Every man working for every other man. Compare this to our natural state, which is every man against every man.
It wasn't just the metallurgy. It isn't just telecommunications. It isn't just fabs.
Layer upon layer of deeply unobvious societal infrastructure - hiding in plain sight, their origins forgotten. Yet, if the scaffolding doesn't hold, the edifice will collapse into the original state of nasty, brutish, and short - every man against every man.
The Magna Carta. The idea that even the king must abide by the law. Reason. Rationalism. The rise of the nation state - imagined communities that allowed millions related by nothing beyond the accident of birth to unite under a flag and an anthem. The rule of law. State monopoly over violence. The painful transition from a culture of honour where every slight must be avenged, to a culture of dignity where decency, codified by legislation, could be assumed. The limited liability company. A stable currency. The central bank.
When such structures work well for long they are forgotten. The citizenry regresses to anthropomorphic reasoning - lightning struck because the lightning God wasn't placated. Crops failed because the locust God wasn't placated. The Weather Gods. There's cause. There's action. There are no complex adaptive systems. There's no organisational behaviour.
The only reality is that which can be seen as everyday physical objects. Immigrants jump over a literal war. Currency, in the order of billions, can be printed at will. All that matters is the press.
The only causal agent is someone we can seen on screen - the Hero, the God. With a stroke of the pen, a flourish...things can be set right.
