There is an argument that India must mediate in the Iran war.

But why?

The debate in India began because Pakistan took the initiative to mediate. So those demanding Indian mediation are basically saying: "If Pakistan can, why not us?"

At best, that is FOMO. At worst, its jealousy of a smaller neighbour attracting the kind of attention some in our strategic community believe India deserves.

But neither FOMO nor jealousy is a sound basis for good foreign policy.

Yes, geography favours Iran. Between the Iranians and US troops, the former will have more desperation and willpower. That always makes a difference. We only need to look at recent history.
That said, while a few thousand troops may not be able to make a difference even if Trump launches a ground invasion, we shouldn't dismiss the chances of the world's most powerful military, aided by Israel that has unmatched Intel.
Whichever way the cookie crumbles, one thing is certain. A protracted ground invasion will FURTHER WIDEN the frame of war, and global economy will be devastated.

To the contrary, I think that a resurgent Iran is a bigger threat to the Gulf countries as well as the US hegemony. So, it is likely that Pakistan gets an additional role as 'destabiliser-in-chief' for Iran as well. Maybe their role would only rise? #IranWar‌

While there is nothing negative in playing a constructive peacemaking role, Pakistan is actually witnessing a real time decline in its geopolitical relevance with the emergence of Iran as a major regional power.

Pakistan’s (re) integration into Middle East security architectures over the past year was predicated on the pre-war encirclement of Iran by a coalition of states led by the U.S. The Pakistan Army was seen by Washington as a key frontline state in bolstering US hegemony in the region.

If this war ends with Iran breaking out of this containment and establishing a more balanced regional order, Pakistan will be one of the big losers from this conflict.

No doubt Pakistanis have far greater coherence about their goal, but the Pakistani influence operation succeeds because it has a welcoming Anglo host.

There is an Anglo-Western consensus that Pakistan is a useful tool for them, including in their project to keep manipulate/bully India and keep it subservient to Western interests.

Even if you argue that this Anglo consensus has weakened, the post-colonial globalist-liberal consensus is that Muslims are a 'protected' victim category while Hindus are 'backward'/'feudal'

So you are less likely to 'influence' these Anglo-Western platforms. India and Hindus should deploy their limited resources at this point to delegitimize these platforms and their ideology.
