If people stop trusting the process through which they choose their government, democracy itself is in danger.

The latest Indian Express investigation raises extremely serious questions about the functioning of the Election Commission.

Two of the three Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, reportedly raised 14 formal objections in 10 months over decisions taken by the Commission, including concerns about voter deletions, the centralisation of electoral-roll systems, and changes to Form 6, the form used by new voters to register.

They reportedly described the Form 6 changes as “unauthorised” and “illegal” and also raised concerns about being kept out of important decisions.

At the same time, the SIR exercise has struck more than 13 crore names from draft electoral rolls across 30 States and Union Territories.

When even members of the constitutional body responsible for conducting elections are formally raising questions about how decisions are being made, the public deserves answers.

Because democracy isn’t just about holding elections.

It is also about people believing that their vote counts, that the electoral rolls are credible, and that the institution conducting the election is independent and transparent.

If that trust disappears, what remains of democracy?
