We are a country of immigrants. Aside from native Americans, we are ALL the product of immigrants. We just have different backgrounds and skin colors. These are my parents. They left their homeland of South Korea and came to America in the late 60’s with nothing and not knowing how to speak English, in search of a better life. They left their families, their friends, and the comfort of a familiar place, to pursue happiness and success. After weeks of searching, my dad found a job in a factory that another Korean immigrant helped him get. My mother was educated as a nurse, and told me how she and my father were out looking for a job for her one day when they saw the words “HOSPITAL” on a sign. My mother went into the building, but came out a few moments later with her hands buried in her face in tears. She had walked into an animal hospital. At one point, my father was here illegally after overstaying his visa, and my parents described to me how on some days they wouldn’t leave their apartment on time to go to work in the morning because they saw this shiny armored truck parked across the street which they thought was the INS looking for illegal immigrants. It turned out to be the local coffee and sandwich truck.

Well, my parents worked tremendously hard, and after moving from apartment to apartment, they were eventually able to buy a small house in a suburb of Chicago where they raised me and my older brother. My brother has a JD, MBA, and an LLM (from Northwestern University), and I too became a lawyer and now have my own law firm. My dad eventually found his way into the car business as a car salesman, and my mom retired as a registered nurse. My father passed away unexpectedly about a month after he attended my law school graduation, so he was able to see that his hard work bore fruit.

My parents never forgot where they came from and they taught us never to forget where we came from. They were given a chance, and their dreams not only became a reality, but will have a long lasting and far reaching impact upon the world.

Look at the faces of the people in this picture. These are the people that are being demonized just so one man can avoid prison. To honor their struggle and legacy is why I have vocally pushed back so hard against the hate and xenophobia spewed by Donald Trump. It’s to keep America the shining democracy it is so our children can pursue their dreams fairly and safely. It’s to protect the promise of this wonderful country that has given so much to my family.

Please join me in urging others to not only vote, but to vote for Kamala Harris to preserve our great nation. Please keep the faces of my dear parents in the back of your mind and in your heart as you speak to people. We can do this. 💪🏼🌊🇺🇸
