As a founder I envision a company where I can completely eliminate the phrase "we are working on it" from the organizational lexicon, permanently replacing it with "I am responsible for it, and here is the result."
Most companies already have KPIs.
Revenue.
CAC.
Churn.
Pipeline.
Product velocity.
Yet execution still drifts.
Why?
The problem isn’t the numbers.
The problem is ownership.
In many leadership teams:
• several people “own” the same KPI
• nobody is responsible for reporting it weekly
• updates appear only when someone asks
So execution becomes founder-dependent.
If the founder pushes → numbers appear.
If the founder relaxes → visibility disappears.
That’s not governance.
That’s manual pressure.
Serious companies operate differently.
They follow one simple rule:
Every KPI has one accountable owner and a fixed weekly reporting deadline.
Not shared ownership.
Not “the team”.
One person.
Quick test for your leadership team:
Take your 5–10 most important KPIs and ask:
1️⃣ Who is the single owner?
2️⃣ When is the weekly reporting deadline?
If either answer is unclear, that KPI isn’t governed.
It’s just monitored.
The structure is simple:
KPI
↓
Owner
↓
Weekly deadline
↓
Leadership visibility
One KPI.
One owner.
One weekly deadline.
That’s execution governance.
I believe this will eventually become standard in serious companies.
Not monthly reporting.
Weekly KPI ownership.
Curious:
How many of your KPIs actually have a clear weekly owner today?
AI Won’t Fix Your Leadership Problem
Everyone says AI will replace managers.
That’s not your problem.
Your problem is this:
Some managers own their numbers.
Some don’t.
That inconsistency creates:
– Status meetings
– Founder chasing
– Late surprises
It’s not a data problem.
It’s an ownership problem.
AI can automate reporting.
It cannot automate responsibility.
The companies that win won’t remove humans at the top.
They’ll make ownership impossible to avoid.
Ownership makes clarity possible.
Clarity makes focus defensible.
Focus protects decision quality.
Decision quality stabilizes identity under stress.
Identity enables compounding instead of intensity cycles.
Reorder it and it breaks.
