💘 Happy Valentine’s Day, guitarists! 💘 What are you getting the love of your life today? New strings? A pickup upgrade? Maybe a well-deserved fret rub? Let’s hear how you’re celebrating! 🎸❤️
How does one “visualize” the fretboard?
To me, its all about connecting shapes together (duh) but there are some tricks ive learned over the years to retain this information in my head.
If you can practise connecting the major scale -> arpeggios -> chords it will help you visualize the fretboard tremendously. It helped me a lot, anyways.
Ill try my best to explain here…
Connecting the Major scale to chords would be like this:
C Major scale - C D E F G A B
In 7th chords - C Maj7 Dmin7 Emin7 FMaj7 G7 Amin7 Bmin7(b5)
Identify where each chord shape lines up with its relative Major scale position.
C Maj7 (root on E string) would line up with the first position of the C Major scale.
D minor (root E string) would line up with the 2nd position of the C Major scale (or Dorian Mode for you Mode lovers)
The C Major 7 chord (root A string) would be over top of the 5th position of the C Major scale (where G is the first note on the E string)
You can do the same type of thing with Arpeggios...
You can also try moving across the pentatonic scale positions like this below 👇
This helped me break outside of typical box patterns a bit more easily.
Thanks for reading hope yall have a great weekend 🎸
