Residents of Equerry Gardens in Montclair, Durban, have received a letter informing foreign nationals without valid documentation, or those with expired permits, that they are required to vacate the residential complex within seven days.

The notice, dated 9 June 2026, states that residents whose documents are in order will be required to present them for inspection to verify their legitimacy. It further warns that anyone found to be residing in the complex illegally may be required to leave the property.

According to the letter, the directive is based on South Africa’s Immigration Act, which makes it a criminal offence to knowingly provide accommodation or assistance to an illegal foreign national. The notice also states that individuals who fail to leave the premises within the specified period could be regarded as unlawful occupiers.
