Ever tried to read a mountain landscape?
Traces, patterns, transitions: a record of motion and change. From thawing permafrost to shifting hydrology, shaping alpine (in)stability.
Once you begin to notice them, you never stop.

What happened at Grosse Glacier (NPI, Patagonia) between 1944 and 1974 ? 🤔⏲️
This, only tree rings and boulders can tell it! 👩🔬🧪
This story involves branched cows at 6m-high and a GLOF of course! 🌊🐄🐮🌲🌳
Bravo Sandra @thesandaic !! 🥰

Back from an amazing field week exploring the Saastal with master's students! From natural hazards to risk analysis, they also delved into the treeline dynamics by quite literally making the trees talk 🌲 ⚠ 🏔 Data collection at its best!

🥳 Out in @nature: Wood cells of tree rings confirm that the current #climatewarming exceeds that of #medieval times by far. Big thanks @snsf_ch for financial support and Dendrosciences @WSL_research team for this cool joint initiative!

Swiss #glaciers have a hard time in 2023!
During the heat wave of the next days the shift to overall annual loss will already occur. Likely the second earliest date after the record-breaking year 2022. All melting from now onwards is unsustainable loss
