The Supreme Court belongs to the American people. It does not belong to any president, any party, or any donor with a private jet.

Its job is to interpret the Constitution independently, not to be a political prize that the country fights over every time a justice dies in office.

That is why I am an original cosponsor of the TERM Act, which would establish 18-year terms for Supreme Court justices and create predictable, staggered appointments roughly every two years. 

Modern justices now serve longer on the bench than at any point in our nation's history.

Public trust in the Court has fallen to historic lows after rulings that overturned decades of precedent and ethics scandals involving luxury gifts and travel from people with business before the bench. 

Predictable terms would lower the stakes of every nomination, end the strategic retirement games both parties have played for decades, and restore the integrity, accountability, and balance the American people deserve.
