Thousands of years ago, the Sahara was green.

And people lived there.

Cave paintings in the Algerian highlands show cattle herders, swimmers and giraffes. Not symbols. Detailed images of people living full lives in a landscape that no longer exists.

Some date back to around 10,000 BC.

At its peak, the Green Sahara contained lakes larger than the Caspian Sea.

But then, roughly 5,500 years ago, a subtle shift in Earth's orbit nudged the African monsoon southward.

A few degrees. The rains retreated. The vegetation followed. The lakes dried.

And the people who had built their lives around permanent water suddenly discovered it wasn't permanent at all.

Most migrated toward the Nile.

Some historians argue this helped fuel the rise of Egyptian civilisation itself.

The Sahara didn't kill its people. It expelled them.

And they built Egypt.

But here's the part that stays with me.

Those cattle herders painted their world onto rock because it was worth remembering.

They had no way of knowing they were recording a disappearing world.

To them, the Green Sahara wasn't a climate phase. It was just home.

Yet we do the same thing.

We build cities on coastlines. Economies on stable weather.

Entire assumptions about the future on conditions that seem permanent.

The Green Sahara lasted for thousands of years. It probably felt permanent right up until it wasn't.

What are we treating as permanent today?
