That was because of a feedback loop

The loop in that scenario:

1 The caller's voice goes down the phone line to the studio
2The studio broadcasts it out live on TV/radio
3The broadcast signal travels to the caller's TV set with that ~50ms analogue delay
4The TV speaker plays it out loud in the caller's room
5The caller's phone microphone picks it up
...and it goes back down the line to the studio again

Not as bad as the screech if you called someone elses phone on speaker in the same room, but a feedback loop that's unpleasant all the same.
