In 2006, Raghu Mahajan was All India Rank 1 in IIT-JEE becoming the first student from Chandigarh ever to top the IIT entrance.

He took the seat almost every topper takes, Computer Science at IIT Delhi.

But two years later, he walked out.

He left for MIT in 2008 to study physics and mathematics instead. Eleven years after that, he co-wrote one of the most important physics papers of the decade, alongside one of the most influential theoretical physicists alive.

The problem had been open since 1976.

That year, Stephen Hawking showed that black holes are not perfectly black. They slowly leak radiation and, given enough time, evaporate completely. But the radiation appeared to carry no trace of whatever had fallen in. If Hawking was right, information could be destroyed forever, something quantum mechanics insists can never happen.

In 1993, physicist Don Page described what the answer would have to look like if information did survive: a curve that rises and then falls, now called the Page curve. For decades, nobody could derive that fall using the same tools Hawking himself had used.

In 2019, working in Princeton, Mahajan co-wrote one of a small group of papers that finally did. His collaborators were Ahmed Almheiri, Ying Zhao and Juan Maldacena. The paper was titled "The Page curve of Hawking radiation from semiclassical geometry."

The Institute for Advanced Study described that wave of work as coming "tantalizingly close" to resolving a paradox that had bedevilled physicists for nearly 50 years.

In 2026, that paper earned him the Frontiers of Science Award, which honours high-impact research from the past decade, presented at the International Congress of Basic Sciences in Beijing.

By then he had already made his choice. In August 2024 he chose not to take a faculty position in the United States and joined ICTS-TIFR in Bengaluru, where his colleagues include Ashoke Sen, with whom he has written papers on string theory.

He has argued that Indian string theorists working in India, taken together, have contributed more to the field than anyone outside the United States.

Sixteen years after leaving, he came home to keep working on the deepest questions in physics from Bengaluru.

"I did not feel at all that I was missing out," he wrote.

Big dreams have always been part of Vedanta’s story.

From transforming barren land into world-scale industrial assets to building businesses that power India’s growth, we have always believed in thinking bigger, building for scale, and challenging what’s possible.

As @PriyaAH_Vedanta, Non-Executive Director, Vedanta and Chairperson, @Hindustan_Zinc_, puts it, the next chapter is about taking that ambition further, using scale, technology and innovation to transform industries and build the metal of the future.

At 60, Gopal Krishna Sharma could have simply gone home after 36 years of service.

He even tried. But within two months of retiring, the silence began to feel heavier than he expected. His children were settled in different cities, his old social circle had changed, and sitting among much older retirees made him feel older too.

So he did something most people wouldn’t imagine at 60.

He joined Maharaja Agrasen University in Himachal Pradesh as an assistant registrar and chose to live in a boys’ hostel.

He wakes up at 6, walks, eats with students, goes to work, helps them with writing and problems, and learns from their world in return.

At first, students found it strange. Then the morning walks, canteen conversations and hostel corridors turned that awkward distance into friendships.

He didn’t try to become younger. He simply refused to stop growing.

And perhaps that is the real lesson of retirement:
You don’t retire from life. You only retire from one version of it.

At 60, Sharma didn’t find a way to pass his time.
He found a reason to show up again.

Glimpses of the successful light-up of the Indurating Machine at the 2 MTPA Pellet Plant, Nagarnar.
The light up was done by Shri Vinay Kumar, Director(Tech.) NMDC and Shri Vivek Nishant Nath,Director(Comml.) on 28.08.26
The Straight Grate Indurating Machine installed at the Nagarnar Pellet Plant is based on technology provided by Metso Outotec – SMS Group, and is being executed by M/s Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T).
The Indurating Machine is the heart of the pelletisation process, where green iron ore pellets are subjected to controlled drying, pre-heating, induration and cooling to produce high-strength, metallurgically suitable iron ore pellets.
The successful commencement of dry-out of the Indurating Machine is a major milestone towards commissioning of the Pellet Plant. It shows NMDC’s commitment
