My uni days were very sweet. I lived like a king, schooled on my own terms, started a company, drove a Corolla in 400L, had a driver at some point, and bought myself a car as a graduation gift (Toyota Camry SE… muscle sport).

But all that might not have happened if I hadn’t squatted with a distant cousin, where I accidentally met a guy who would change my life.

During my pre-degree and 100L, I lived in a lodge that had all sorts of people...the church boys, academic students, non-academic students, tech guys, G-boys… and biggest of all, the lodge was the headquarters of all the “stoners” in that area (if you know you know).

There was a Christ Embassy lady in Room 1 (upstairs) who used to pray so loudly in the morning that she’d wake the whole lodge. But while she was praying, our “stoner” neighbours and their friends would be setting the lodge on fire ...all the puffs, clouds, and coughs right behind her windows.

Right beneath her room, downstairs, was another Christian guy, Segun, a devoted Kings Word member. He didn’t pray as loudly as our sister upstairs, but he was always on calls with white people on Skype.

Rumour had it that he was a Yahoo boy. The whole lodge was talking about it...you know those ear-deafening but silent gossips. Loud enough that the whole lodge of 20 rooms knew, but silent enough that he didn’t know. So I thought.

Then there was the curious me. I had heard Segun’s gist in the lodge, but something just wasn’t adding up. How could he be a Christian brother and a Yahoo boy at the same time? So, I went to his room one day to charge my laptop.

As always, Segun was on a Skype call, pitching a white guy. I was just hearing “so, so thousand $s” When he dropped off the call, I asked him point blank, “What are you into? What do you actually do?”

Surprisingly, Segun was more than eager to tell me. He told me how he worked with foreign companies, how he made money online, bla bla bla. More shocking was when he started talking about how much he made/hr, how people had been calling him a Yahoo boy, and how he wished they could walk up to ask so he could show them.

Segun put me on big time ... he taught me freelancing. Fast forward to 6 months , I had made over $4K. International payment was hard then.. you could only use Skrill, Payoneer, and PayPal (which wasn’t and still isn’t working in Nigeria).

I was mad excited, always going to Segun with questions, though still doubtful if the money was real. Eventually, I ordered a Payoneer card and paid for express delivery via DHL. It took 3 days. I almost didn’t sleep during those 3 days, was tracking it.

Got the card, ran home to Segun’s room. I was still doubtful. Then he asked me to go and withdraw. I went to GTB inside FUTA, the ATM gallery. Slotted in the card, pressed 5K, and it came out ...mint note. Omooooooo… na so e be?

I almost left the ATM, but what if they changed their mind and removed the remaining money from the card? So, I withdrew everything I could. Stashed cash in all my pockets and school bag. People on the queue were furious and stunned at the same time.

I went to South Gate , I needed to spend the money to be sure it was real. Bought a pair of running shoes and 2 kilos of turkey. Omg.

I ran to Segun’s room with the cash to show him and thank him. I was feeling fly, on top of the world. All this moniess for a bloody 100L student.

But Segun chose to humble me on the spot. While I was feeling fly, he said, “Wale, now that you’ve confirmed it’s real, so when will you make your first $50,000?”

“50 what? 50 thousand dollars? What do I need it for? Let me enjoy my moment, bros abeg.” Lol.

Segun started schooling me; opening my eyes to more, working on my mindset, etc.

I had planned to give him part of the money, but he turned it down. He said the only way I could pay him back was to stay grounded, make more money, and teach others. I’ve done the same for more than 20 people for free.

I didn’t befriend Segun. I knew right there that this person shouldn’t be my friend but my mentor. That was it. He became my mentor without me asking. But it also didn’t just happen, I valued him, the access, and I did my part.

It’s been 10+ yrs now.. I’ve maintained the relationship. If he calls me in the middle of the night to run an errand for him, off I will go. NO EXCUSES, NO IFs, NO BUTs.

I met Ravi (an Indian data wiz) from the freelancing platform Segun introduced me to. Ravi would later drag me into data and became my career mentor who got me my first full-time foreign job.

I also made friends from different parts of the world from that same freelancing platform, some of whom are now lifelong friends.

A few have been to Nigeria to visit me. One is an angel investor in my customer reviews start-up, Parrot (@use_parrot).

Another moment I can never forget was when I needed an account and a letter of introduction from a commercial bank for my market intelligence company.

Two commercial banks had turned me down prior. I spoke with Segun about it… we met at GTB a few days later. He told his account manager, “Dami, this is Wale, please accord him the same assistance.” That was it.

I’ve really enjoyed the gift of men and friendship.

However, while friendship is good and enjoyable, we shouldn’t be too woke to differentiate between who should be our friends and who we should sit under to learn and be mentored.

It has nothing to do with age. It takes discernment.
