There is a dangerous temptation in ministry that very few people recognise because it disguises itself as spiritual maturity. It sounds profound. It looks like depth. People even applaud it. But it quietly destroys ministers. I call it the sin of over syllabus.

When I was in school there was always one student who refused to stay within the syllabus. Instead of mastering the subjects he was actually going to be examined on, he would arrive carrying his father's university textbooks. He quoted concepts nobody else had heard. He used vocabulary far beyond the classroom. For a while everyone thought he was the smartest student in the room.

But there was one problem.

The examination board had absolutely no interest in his father's university notes.

It was going to examine him on his own syllabus.

The papers were set at ordinary level, not university level. The student who spent all his time sounding advanced often failed the very examination that mattered because he had neglected the fundamentals in pursuit of sophistication.

I have watched ministers make exactly the same mistake.

Some ministers are always reaching for the next mystery. They are constantly unveiling hidden revelations. Every sermon must contain something nobody has ever heard before. Every conversation must leave people amazed at how deep they are.

Meanwhile they have never mastered the ordinary work that God actually called them to do.

They can explain mysteries but they cannot shepherd people.

They can discuss heavenly dimensions but they cannot lead a local church.

They can argue complicated doctrines but they cannot faithfully teach the simple truths that transform lives.

They can speak for hours about things hidden from men while neglecting the things God has already made plain.

They are carrying their father's university notes into an examination that is testing their ordinary level work.

Do you know why that student carried those advanced books?

It was not because the examination demanded them.

It was because the classroom admired them.

That is the real sin of over syllabus.

It is not an intellectual problem.

It is a pride problem.

It is the desire to appear deeper than you really are.

It is the craving to impress people instead of pleasing God.

It is the temptation to sound advanced before you have become faithful.

There is something in the flesh that enjoys admiration. There is something in the human heart that loves being called profound. But God has never measured ministers by how complicated they sound. He measures them by how faithfully they obey.

The Lord is not going to ask how many mysteries you uncovered.

He is going to ask whether you prayed.

Whether you loved His people.

Whether you guarded sound doctrine.

Whether you remained faithful.

Whether you lived what you preached.

Whether you cared for the flock He entrusted to you.

The tragedy is that many ministers are preparing for an examination that Heaven never set. They are studying subjects that impress people while neglecting the syllabus that God will actually mark.

Never despise the fundamentals because they seem ordinary.

Everything extraordinary in the Kingdom rests upon something ordinary that was done faithfully for a very long time.

A ministry does not collapse because the revelations were too small.

It collapses because the foundations were too weak.

Master the basics until they become part of your nature.

Master prayer.

Master obedience.

Master character.

Master sound doctrine.

Master shepherding.

Master faithfulness.

When the foundations become unshakable, God Himself will entrust you with greater things.

But if you reach for greater things before mastering the foundation, you are not building higher.

You are only making the collapse more spectacular.

God will never examine you on the syllabus that impressed men but on the syllabus He gave you

The ones who pass will be those who quietly mastered the fundamentals and faithfully lived them.
