This was not a recreational dive beyond 130 feet in a cave. There is an error in the article stating more oxygen is needed at extreme depths. More oxygen in the mix limits your max depth. At the depths they were at, you need the same or slightly less oxygen to prevent oxygen toxicity and less nitrogen to avoid narcosis (creates the feeling of being drunk). The normal breathing gas is called Trimix which replaces some nitrogen with helium to avoid narcosis and often has lower oxygen than air to avoid toxicity. This sort of Trimix can’t be breathed at shallow depth and a “travel” gas is also required.
