Sonny, I think I can speak on behalf of all Tottenham fans - words cannot truly express what you mean to this fanbase.
After scoring three in your first week with the club back in 2015, two on your debut at the lane, we knew you were going to be different.
Since then, every run, every goal, every assist, every dribble, every nutmeg, every piece of silk - we saw it, we felt it, and we’ll never forget it.
But you were more than just a world-class footballer, it was your warm smile, energy and humble nature that warmed you to this fanbase.
Great players are ten to the dozen, great humans are much more rare in this day and age. But we’ve seen you. How you carry yourself, how you interact with others; playing with your teammates children, taking time with the fans, sacrificing personal relationships to give your all for club and country. You’re one hell of a human.
But what made you different, what made you ours, was your loyalty. You never once gave up on us. Never flirted with the exit door. When the club was at its lowest, when you were in huge demand, when uncertainty swirled and others walked, you stayed. You didn’t just stay, you committed, you signed, you chose us. And in that moment, for many, regardless of what came after it, you became a true Tottenham legend.
But for the avoidance of doubt, you weren’t finished. You looked at this club, these fans, and still believed. After so many near misses, and after almost 20 years, you ended our trophy drought, leading us to European glory. Our first UEFA cup in over 40 years. You did what many said could not be done at Spurs.
That wasn’t just a trophy for us, for this club, you’ve changed our mentality, our DNA, the status quo. We can all feel it. Once Spursy, now winners, you did that, and we are all truly thankful.
Whilst this is an incredibly sad moment for all of us, and for you especially, there couldn’t have been a better time to leave. With your head held high, trophy in hand.
A true legend of this football club in all senses of the word.
What a journey.
What a player.
What a man.
We’ll miss the goals, the assists, the dribbles - but most of all, we’ll miss you.
Thank you for everything.
We love you.
And always will.
Captain. Leader. Legend.
Nice one Sonny.
So, Ange was given a squad that couldn’t compete across all comps
(Regardless of whether he thought it could at the start of the season, it couldn’t)
The squad was ravaged by the worst injury crisis in Tottenhams history, with 41 injuries and 1,553 days of lost playing time across the squad.
Even still, he managed to navigate 15 league and knockout games, leading the team to its first European cup in 41 years.
And instead of backing him, and allowing him to develop the squad whilst morale and fan connection was at an all time high, we’ve sacked him for prioritising silverware over league performances, when he didn’t have the squad to do both.
In short, future managers know that success is secondary, ensuring European football regardless of silverware is now the yardstick. Tottenham rewards mediocrity.
What gets me is all the Levy and ENIC outers that wanted Ange gone.
We had a manager that openly said we need to improve the squad with experience, and to tie down our best assets like Romero for the long-term.
Ange, was pushing Levy for what you all wanted.
Yet you wanted him gone.
Well I hope you’re ready for 18 months of Frank, until he ultimately gets the same treatment, he’ll focus on developing our younger players, selling the likes of Romero, Benny, Porro at al, everything we’ve built over the last 2 years, and now he’ll almost certainly look to prioritise “top 4” - warra trophy! You can wave goodbye to silverware now chaps.
Normal service has resumed.
Anyway, this one’s for you guys 🍻 enjoy “competing” over the next few seasons. Waving your LevyOut banners, when you had someone in play that could have aided your cause. Smart fuckers 👏🏻
