Egan refused to give up his activism, leading to the end of the relationship in 1964.
After a brief time apart, they ran into each other again and Egan agreed to end his activism. The couple then moved to Vancouver Island and lived openly as a gay couple.

In 1964, he was featured in The Homosexual Next Door, a Maclean's article by Sydney Kratz. The article was a rare positive portrayal of homosexuality by the media at the time.
