If the IEC was serious about registering young people to vote, it would announce 2-3 special days to station in every high school, university and TVET college campus in South Africa.
By policy the IEC is supposed to have infrastructure to service more than 23 000 voting stations across the country.
There are an odd 7 000 high schools and around 300 university and TVET campuses.
Combined, that account for just 30% (7 300) of the footprint the IEC is expected to cover during elections.
If the IEC can reach over 23 000 voting stations, why can it not reach a mere 7 300 places where young people are concentrated?
Today, while at the voter registration process in Midrand, I had a constructive engagement with @ZungulaVuyo . Although I am a committed member and supporter of the Economic Freedom Fighters, it was encouraging to engage with a fellow member of the broader progressive left.
Our discussion reflected the importance of political dialogue, mutual respect, and the exchange of ideas among those who share a commitment to social justice, economic transformation, and the advancement of our people. Differences in political affiliation should never prevent meaningful engagement where common interests of the masses are concerned.
It was a positive and respectful interaction, demonstrating that progressive forces can engage one another in the spirit of democracy and nation-building.
